How To Enter Scientific Notation In Webassign
How to Enter Your ChemWork Answers
The following provides helpful instructions on how to answer questions in ChemWork assignments. If you are using WebAssign®, y'all should read the instructions in the WebAssign® Pupil Guide. Enquire your professor for instructions if yous are using other exercises in Eduspace also ChemWork or WebAssign.
Accuracy is important. Always carefully bank check your calculations and significant figures for numerical answers, and check spelling and format for nonnumerical answers.
Numerical answers will exist assessed for correct significant figures. In near cases an respond that shows an incorrect number of significant figures, but is otherwise accurate, will be accustomed, but you will receive feedback indicating that yous have entered an answer with incorrect significant figures. For questions that are intended specifically to assess your understanding of significant figures, answers with incorrect pregnant figures volition not be accustomed.
When conveying out calculations, it is best to retain actress digits until you have obtained the final answer, then round to the appropriate number of pregnant figures. Eduspace has been programmed to tolerate slight differences that could be caused past normal differences in rounding.
In most cases where responses require a specialized format, there will be instructions and an example given with the trouble. The most mutual formatting concerns are as well explained below:
1. Entering Numbers
a. Scientific Notation
ii. Entering Chemical Formulas
a. Compounds
b. Ions
three. Entering Elements and Compound Names
four. Entering Electron Configurations
5. Entering Hybridizations
six. Entering Nuclides
7. Entering Coefficients for Balanced Equations
eight. Molecular Structures
ix. Other Structures or Diagrams
i. Inbound Numbers
Practise not include units in your numerical answers. The appropriate units should be shown but later the entry box. Be sure your numerical respond correlates with the units shown, e.g., if you lot calculated fourth dimension in minutes, but the units shown are seconds, you must convert your answer to seconds before entering it.
ane.a. Scientific Notation
Eduspace accepts numbers in both standard decimal form and scientific notation; all the same, you may be asked or required to utilize scientific note in order to unambiguously limited significant figures. Eduspace uses the Eastward notation for times 10 to the in scientific notation. For example, 56000, with 3 pregnant figures would be expressed 5.lx x4, and should be entered in Eduspace every bit v.60e4 or 5.60e+four. Exercise not insert a space between the numbers and e. A few more examples are:
100 (ane sig. fig.) = 1e2 or 1e+2
100 (3 sig. figs.) = 1.00e2 or 1.00e+2
0.0045 = 4.5e-3
0.0000700 = seven.00e-5
Notation that Eduspace does not recognize a decimal at the cease of a number to define significant figures. You may be familiar with writing 100. to designate 3 pregnant figures, but you must apply scientific notation in Eduspace to do so.

2. Entering Chemic Formulas
As with other answers, spelling counts hither also. Be certain you use the correct upper- and lower-example symbols for elements, for example Na not na , and NaOH, not naoh.
ii.a. Compounds
Enter the formula without subscripts (H2O should be entered as H2o). If parentheses or brackets are nowadays in the chemical formula, include them just as you would when writing the formula on paper. See more examples in the table below.
2.b. Ions
If the substance is an ion, use brackets around the formula, followed by the charge (Ca2+ should be entered as [Ca]two+). Remember to put the sign after the magnitude for the charge. See more than examples in the table below.
Compound or Ion | What to Enter |
C12H22Oeleven | C12H22O11 |
Al(OH)3 | Al(OH)3 |
[Co(NH3)6]Cl2 | [Co(NH3)vi]Cl2 |
SO4 ii- | [SO4]2- |
NO3 - | [NO3]- or [NO3]1- |
Ag(NH3)2 + | [Ag(NH3)two]+ or [Ag(NH3)ii]1+ |

3. Entering Elements and Compound Names
Correct spelling is required for all element names and compound names entered as answers. Capitalization is not required. Compound names that are two or more words must include a space between the words (equally in sodium chloride). Compound names including Roman numerals should have no space betwixt the chemical element and the Roman numeral in parentheses (equally in atomic number 26(III) hydroxide). Whatsoever embedded punctuation (as in 2,3-dimethylpentane) must be included. In some names there may exist an italicized prefix; enter your reply without whatsoever italics.

iv. Entering Electron Configurations
Electron configurations should exist entered without superscripts or italics, and with a space betwixt each of the subshells. The subshells should exist listed in their filling order.
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1 for 1s 2 twos 2 2p half dozen 3s 1
[Ar] 4s2 3d10 4p1 for [Ar] 4s two iiid 10 4p 1

5. Inbound Hybridizations
Hybrid orbital designations should be entered without superscripts or italics.
sp for sp
d2sp3 for d 2 sp 3

6. Entering Nuclides
Nuclide symbols should be entered in a one-line format: Z-Element-A, where Z = atomic number, A = mass number, and Element is the symbol for the element.
92-U-238 for
10-Ne-22 for

vii. Entering Coefficients for Balanced Equations
When asked to enter the coefficients to balance a chemical equation, you must employ the lowest whole-number ratio. In cases where but one equivalent of a species would be present, y'all must enter a 1. In some cases there will be species included in the question that are not part of the counterbalanced chemical equation. In those cases, enter a 0 (zero) in the box. Exercise not exit whatsoever boxes blank.
2 Hii + one O2 → 2 HtwoO
6 H+ + 0 H2O + 8 I + 1 IOiii → three Ithree + 3 H2O + 0 H+

viii. Molecular Structures
This section applies to Eduspace end-of-chapter homework problems only.
Some questions require you to apply a special drawing editor. This tool provides a special pop-up window in which to draw the structure respective to your answer. The editor then converts your drawing into a code which Eduspace tin can and so compare to the right reply(southward).
Questions requiring use of this tool will show an icon immediately to the right of the answer box. Click on the icon to launch the interface. Utilise the menus and templates to describe your molecule, and then click the button in the lower right corner that says Set up Molecule to transfer the coded data dorsum to the corresponding fill-in box in Eduspace. If you need to edit your structure after returning to Eduspace, click the icon to launch the editor once more. Practise non endeavor to directly edit the coded answer.
This tool is used mainly for organic structures. It will automatically be fix to draw a carbon-carbon unmarried bond, simply y'all can change that past choosing some other chemical element from the carte. The correct number of hydrogen atoms will be shown to complete the valence requirements of nonhydrogen atoms in the structure, but the program will not preclude you from attaching more atoms manually. Unless you are specifically instructed in the question, do non evidence separate bonds to all the hydrogens in your construction, i.e. exit the default hydrogens showing.

9. Other Structures or Diagrams
This section applies to Eduspace end-of-chapter homework bug only.
A few questions require you to draw a structure, sketch an appliance, or prepare some other diagram that cannot exist graded by Eduspace. In these cases yous should write your answer neatly on paper and submit information technology to your instructor if he or she requests. For cess within Eduspace, you will also exist asked to answer some questions based on your cartoon. These questions are designed so that you lot must refer to your drawing in gild to answer them.
